    • Hi Kate!
I think of you on the Fourth of July since the time I began following your blog and learned that you served our country. Happiest of Fourths to you. It looks like there is a lot going on Big Sur way this weekend and I hope you get to enjoy some of it! Thank you for the comment on this Grand Old Flag. 🙂

  3. Wonderful! New angle, new vantage point, new highlights. Lots of motion and vitality. Just the way we want our countries to be, Leslie. Happy Independence Day.

    • What an absolutely lovely thought about country in reference to this image, Amy. Thank you! I thought it was kind of cool that I wished your country a Happy Birthday on Friday. I had no idea or celebration dates were within days of each other.

  4. filled with life and movement, Leslie, … Happy Independence Day to you…xPenx

    • Thank you, Pen! I thought of you and others’ blogs I visit from other countries and how we are all supportive of each other in blogland about our countries’ celebrations, when I posted this. So I thank you and others who extend this wish for ‘Happy’!!!!!!!

  5. Delightful Leslie! Love the way the flag billows as if a breeze has caught it 🙂 Happy Independence Day!

    • I need to paint everyone’s flags who visit here from other countries don’t I, Lynda. Maybe a project to consider. I was new to the worldwide web and this land of bloggers sharing their interests and knowledge and thoughts, when I started this blog. Thank you for this wish of a Happy Independence Day and a wonderful comment to the billowing flag painting above, Lynda! 🙂

    • Thank you so much, Zeinab. It is so awesome that you are the fourth comment in a row from another country. It feels good to know that we share across the miles in each other’s visions. Thank you so much for your insightful comment.

  7. Beautiful, Leslie! Happy 4th of July!

    • Thank you, Debbie. Happy Fourth of July to you, too! Do you get to view fireworks over the ocean where you live? That would be so awesome!

  8. Love it, Leslie! Happy Fourth!

  9. Great painting! Happy 4th of July 🙂

  10. Blue-white-red pride! Happy 4th of July!

  11. Just beautiful, Leslie–happy 4th!

    Hugs,
    Gayle

  12. Wow Leslie… That’s simply amazing… I love the way you’ve managed to create such depth to the flag billowing in the wind… and the way it seems to sparkle…

    • Thanks a bunch, Brian! I splatteredalittle bit of that liquid frisket or masking fluid on the white paper before I began painting and it savedthat white splatter areasyou see. The depth came mostly from painting in watered down blue for the wrinkles and dominant shadow to the right.

  13. Your flag is blowing with pride, hats off!

  14. Simply beautiful,
    Fully, exultantly alive!
    Hugs
    Marinela

  15. leslie,

the first thing that attracts me on this painting, is the crispness of the colours red and blue and the tiny speckles of white. i feel a raw energy of it floating in the wind. very nice!

    • I like that word “crispness”. That’s what I felt it looked like as I applied the colors. Thank you, Marvin!

  16. This is fabulous – the folds and wrinkles are amazing! Hope you had a wonderful 4th July celebration!

    • The 4th was wonderful. I had a day to do just as i please and was able to trim up all but a few of my bushes and get the weeding done! YAY! Thank you, Nicola!

  17. Beautiful flag, Leslie – I love your painting!!!! And I hope you had a lovely day on the 4th of July!!

  18. This is so beautiful, Leslie! Your blog always inspires me so much!!! I hope you had a great holiday!

    • You are totally kind as I thought you inspired me! 🙂 I did have a good 4th! Hope your husband is up and about, now, and that you both enjoyed the Holiday, too!

  19. Perfect! A wonderful salute to our freedom and those who gave it to us. Beautiful job Leslie!

    • Thank you, Ryan. I DID think about those who have served and are serving while painting this. Also thought about a time in the third grade when I painted this flag in poster paints. 🙂 Thank you, Ryan!

  20. BEAUTIFUL !

    • WOW! Thank you, sis. Since the fourth is your favorite Holiday, I take this as high praise indeed.

  21. Very cool painting. Happy 4th! I love the composition and the dynamic movement of the flag.

  22. this flag moves…and the colors sing…must be a leslie creation 🙂

  23. Oh, that is really pretty! I love the rich colors, it looks like velvet.

    • Thank you, Anne. I hadn’t noticed that until you mentioned it. It does look somewhat velvety.

  24. It is so beautiful that I thought at first sight that is a patchwork, but of course it is not. Really well done. I love how beautiful it is waving.

    • Actually, Sartenada, this finished image has me thinking of painting a close crop of other countries’ flags. That kind of goes along with your feeling about this looking like a patchwork. Thank you!

  25. This is a most excellent offering Leslie,
a delightful piece of work that everyone
here will appreciate… I like the flowing
material that has been conjured in the
art of your brush strokes… Brilliant

    Androgoth Xx

    • Thank you, Andro. A whim, I think, brought about by the anticipation of another Fourth of July . 🙂

  26. Such an appropriate image for the holiday! I’ve always been fascinated by the different contexts this image appears in.

  27. “myself on paper” I would have taken all of it that way, coming from an artist such as you. I have to think on this one.

I love this picture of the flag. Most are so trite. This is refreshing and has a special joy about it.

    • Whoops! Sorry. I thought the photographs were grouped in one post. Early morning eyes before coffee!!! Sorry …So the first comment goes to the next post moving in reverse order…

      • That’s O’kay! That would be this post: https://lesliepaints.wordpress.com/2011/07/02/indiana-inspiration-trees-continuing-my-studies-of-rice-papers-and-watercolor/

There is such a fine line between “seeing” and replicaring what we see and actually seeing from our own mind and soul’s way. There are times when, due to the approach I take, I go somewhere else and rely on a host of imagery and myself to bring that painting forward. That is much like what this technique does to me. At some point the reference material is abandoned because I see something compiled from a collection of my visions and senses. That is what I meant, here. It is a freeing feeling and I never know where this leads; bowing to the total experiences that this soul has accumulated over the course of my lifetime. These paintings tend to look different. I believe you touch on that everytime you write, Jamie. I touch on it intermittently. I think I collect imagery and add something of me, most of the time, then there are these.

  28. Lieber Gruss von mir wünsche noch einen schönen Tag Gislinde http://giselzitrone.wordpree.com/

  29. Really like this. Nice color. The splashes of white make it different, and I love the movement.

    • Wow. Thank you, Yousei. I was hoping by splashing it that it would have more energy of the 4th of July to it.
