    • Thank-you, Rahina! Weren’t we painting and drawing clouds late summer and into the fall Last year? They are so abstract and wonderful…..I have not captured them with the flair I wish to someday and I think that is their allure. Have fun! 🙂

    • Thank-you, Alex. What do you do with white, Right? Everytime there is a large amount of white, it forces me to get my creativity into the mix. Do you find that to be true? I play in it. 🙂

    • Thank-you, Kokot. It amazes me how important light can be in art. I am working on it. Sometimes I can get it but most times I struggle. Perhaps that is something that keeps us all going?

    • Thanks, Heather! The sky was an even brighter blue in the reference but I couldn’t quite match it.

    • Thank-you, K! I am trying to understand and learn how to render a skyscape with clouds. I find them difficult and am hoping, with practice, I improve on what I have done with skies in the past.

  17. WOWZA, this is awesome. I finally went to college when I was 31 n 32 and one of the most memorable paintings I saw that has stuck with me to this day is an absolutely gorgeous landscape of a distant field with the clouds being the center of interest. for me your painting is right there with that little work of art so long ago forever in my grape.

  19. I love your use of light and the otherworldly feeling you get while looking at this painting. Beautiful colors as well! You used just enough warm tones to make the painting feel a bit joyful, as though reflecting on a fond memory.

    • I wish I had witnessed something like this in real life. I am rarely by a large body of water. I have seen some pretty amazing cloud formations, though. Thank-you, Bree, for your comment and especially for saying “otherworldly”. I was searching for that.

    • Thank-you, Carol. It took me forever to figure out that there was yellow in it. I kept staring at the reference trying to figure out what caused the light to be different below the clouds than what I saw above. I painted swatches on practice papers until I figured out the yellow. I was reading in a watercolor book about clouds,last night, and the author said “don’t forget the yellow in clouds”. LOL Wish I’d read that sooner.Might not have taken so long……

    • Thank-you for the comment on “almost spiritual”, Ryan. I tried for some of that as Ichabod spoke on spiritual topics quite a bit. He would be pleased, I think. Have you tried clouds? I would think you would be able to render a fantastic piece on them.

  22. Hi Leslie!

    I didn’t comment on this one right away, I felt that I need time to think about it, and look at it… There’s something about the light that makes me want to step into the image. You made the sea perfectly, just as I remember in my mind the perfect, genuine “gold”. I always think to myself that the truly valuable gold is the one in the sea that nobody can catch, or fight over or kill over, or sell and buy as if everything can be valued in money. You can set a price on something like that. The gold in the sea, I mean. It’s always going to be too incredible… 🙂

    • Do you live near the sea, Camilla. I didn’t look your town up on a map. Thank-you for the comment on the gold. It took me forever to figure out that there was yellow in this. I stared at the reference and kept playing around with colors on another sheet of paper till I tried yellow for that gold you speak of. See? I could have just asked you! 🙂

        I do, or I live by a fjord. There’s a river in my town and it runs out into a fjord. I have great views over the fjord from my house, and you don’t have to walk for a very long time to get there. Yeah, you could have 😉

  23. Lovely clouds, nice silver lining too. There is a light area that divides the picture vertically. It works well.

    • Thank-you, Jay. Dividing the picture vertically is not too good a thing. I was hoping that I had taken care of that by creating a halo effect on water and a reverse one in the sky. Next time I’ll exagerrate that a little more or give more of a foreground. Thank-you for pointing that out as I’ll need to watch for that. 🙂

  24. Actually it is a good thing, and a fundamental approach to composition. Edgar Degas did it all the time. You don’t know everything, you know 🙂

    • No. I don’t know everything. I am glad you pointed it out. I try not to divide my compositions because I fear not being able to handle it if I do. That is what I should have said. Sorry. I was appreciative that you pointed it out.

  27. This definately deserves enlarging – that way you see all those nice little white marks of the water in an almost abstracted way. The masking fluid gives an effect which reminds me of lino cuts which I find appealing.

    • Thank-you, Sonya. I like that reference you make to a lino cut look.
      I loved your wild daffodils, by the way! In fact, I can still picture the entire composition in my mind, it was so powerful.

    And with each scroll, I see I’ve missed something comment worthy.
    But this piece especially is stunning. I expect to hear the voice of Charlton Heston, bellowing and humbling.
    You seem to master so many mediums.

    • My sister would be so happy if Charlton Heston bellowed! lol Thank-you for this wonderful compliment but I feel master of nothing. At least with watercolor, the water does half the work. What you do with oil is so impressive and has loads of energy!
